I am the head of software development for a growing U.S. company that provides security services and software. We outsource part of our development work to India. However, due to the difference in the time zones, we are currently looking to outsource closer to home. We have been looking at Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize, etc. However, connectivity issues such as these preclude us from considering Belize any further. It is very unfortunate!

For what it’s worth, feel free to use our company as an example of a business that passed up Belize because of this issue.

Belize Bank just lost in English court. Not able to collect for the corrupt deal with Musa. Pissed Satin Aschcroft off so he is squeezing somewhere else.

Maybe we need to go back to court. Same courupt situation.

We could be doing software development like India here but nobody in their right mind would invest good money to be at the mercy of BTL. They would want a direct connect to the fiber optic.

Ha ha!! Belizetelemedia 2 funy

I was told "Smart" is owned under a different name but the same people / BTL. Anyone know if this is true?

I also heard there is a Fiber optic cable under the ocean from miami to the port of Belize and BTL has blocked it's use with the help of the GOB. Anyone know if THIS is true?

Is this really true? This is the first we have heard about any such agreement that makes this blocking legal? Does anyone have any documentation of this agreement? Or is this just more hearsay?

Well in my opinion this privileged agreement could not be held binding for many reasons. The Countries financial future being number one. This activity puts Belize on a small list of countries that do this. The first thing to do is to require BTL to shape up it's service to justify this privilege. How can they launch campaigns to entice back many Belizeans who have left to get educations but failed to return for lack of opportunity, "if" they cannot permit the necessary flow of International communication? Doesn't take more than a first semester economy student to see the folly there. Belize needs Sustainable development in industries like export, media arts, green energy, and forms of green transportation. It's hard enough to get commitments for such challenges as it is in the world markets. But to handicap and frustrate all who would Venture, is a sin against the peoples of Belize and I'm pretty sure they're tired of that. There's a new generation who will need these opportunities and many very Internet Savvy. No doubt they will be thinking outside the X-box.

Before our wonderful Prime Minister Musa left office he signed a sweet little private deal to allow 15 years of uncontested monopoly for BTL and legal blocking of VOIP for the 15 years also. Deep pockets can accomplish much in a 3rd world country. I was hoping we were growing beyond this. I suppose that "the powers of the Country" think ignorance is truly bliss for the complete population. I would love to know if anyone has managed to break the most recent blocking of Hot Spot and voip?
